“Intermission” at 150 1st Ave

On the last day in January, on our last night in the building at 150 1st Avenue, Elastic City took a group of stakeholders & staff on an artist-led walk to celebrate the spaces of PS122 as they had been since 1980. The walk was entitled Intermission and we were invited to stretch our legs, take a piss and walk through the historic theaters one last time. We dug in, dressed up and tagged the wall before it fell — house lights (and sparklers!) were blinking…

The walk was dimly lit but here are a few photos that came out that night:

Special thanks to Elastic City’s Todd Shalom and Niegel Smith for crafting a wonderful way to say one last adieu (for now!).

Handing Over the Keys

Today PS122 officially handed over our keys to the contractors who will be renovating the building at 150 First Ave. It’s sad to say goodbye but I’ll say this: my pockets are way lighter without all those keys! The photo above shows Derek’s extensive key collection from more than a decade at PS122. I can only imagine how many the superintendent Bobby Stella had.

Where Did it All Go? PS122 in Storage

Seeing all the pictures of PS122’s empty spaces you might have asked where did all the lighting and sound equipment go? Well the technical crew packed it all up and carted it out to Bushwick, Brooklyn to be stored for a couple years. When I saw the pictures of the storage space my first thought was “nice hardwood floors”. I wonder if there’s any room for a bunk bed in there?

New Pre Construction Photo From Site of New Theater

Director of production Derek Lloyd met the contractors who will be renovating our space at 150 First Avenue. Today he brings back a photo from the current 4th floor of the building in what will eventually be the entrance to our new theater.

Touring PS122 with Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer

This week we gave Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer & his Deputy Chief of Staff Matthew Wallace a tour of 150 First Avenue, including the roof, Painting Space 122’s studios, AIDS Service Center’s space and Mabou Mines’ studio theater. We can’t wait for the renovations to begin Feb 1, 2013 so we can get back into our new, bigger, ADA compliant, column-free theaters all thanks to the City of New York!
