Today PS122 officially handed over our keys to the contractors who will be renovating the building at 150 First Ave. It’s sad to say goodbye but I’ll say this: my pockets are way lighter without all those keys! The photo above shows Derek’s extensive key collection from more than a decade at PS122. I can only imagine how many the superintendent Bobby Stella had.

Where Did it All Go? PS122 in Storage
Seeing all the pictures of PS122’s empty spaces you might have asked where did all the lighting and sound equipment go? Well the technical crew packed it all up and carted it out to Bushwick, Brooklyn to be stored for a couple years. When I saw the pictures of the storage space my first thought was “nice hardwood floors”. I wonder if there’s any room for a bunk bed in there?
Interviewing Bobby Stella
A few weeks ago we sat down for a video interview with long time Superintendent of PS122’s building, Bobby Stella. Bobby has a lot of stories about PS122’s history – he was the first person to enter the space in the 1970’s when the city had condemned the building and he’s instrumental in the legacy of Performance Space 122 and all of the tenants at 150 First Avenue. After decades of servicing PS122’s boilers 7 days a week Bobby has decided to retire and enjoy some well earned time with his family. Here are some photos from our interview session (video coming soon) and an Avant Garde Arama flier which features a photo of Bobby loading the boiler with coal in the 1980’s. Thanks again to Bobby for taking the time to share his stories and for his unbelievable dedication to our home at 150 First Ave.
Back Against The Wall
Like many childhood homes, PS122’s building in the East Village had door frame in the housemanager’s office where staff members would measure their height. I don’t know how they did it but the tech crew somehow cut the wood out and saved it before the renovation. I don’t think this item would fetch much money if we tried to auction it off but it’s fun to look at the varied heights of our staff. And I’m confused about this: Box Office Manager Chris Walters and I have multiple heights marked? Did we grow during our employ – or perhaps just slouched?
New Pre Construction Photo From Site of New Theater
Director of production Derek Lloyd met the contractors who will be renovating our space at 150 First Avenue. Today he brings back a photo from the current 4th floor of the building in what will eventually be the entrance to our new theater.
