Performance Girl New York is a pastiche cosmetics company newly founded by Janggo Mahmud, beauty enthusiast, hyperfemme ephemerist, social worker turned arts administrator, and the 2025-2027 Keith Haring Curatorial Fellow at Performance Space New York. PGNY recalls motifs of YouTubeβs radically approachable βbeauty communityβ, a pillar of β08 recession pop culture that democratized makeup artistry and industry expertise as a lure to study material culture, nurture forms of social capital, and offer accessible peer support within the art world.
Poised as a community of practiceβa social framework coined by Etienne Wenger in 1998 that credits consistent, grassroots engagement as a fundamental for apprenticeship and meaning-making, PGNY will commission femme cultural workers Mahmud encounters on personal digital feeds to restage relational content-making structures such as βGRWMβ and βDIMLβ videos to motivate femme aesthetics, rituals, and politics in contemporary art. Serving as brand ambassadors, this cohort of interdisciplinaries will test new ways of sharing their work, inquiries, interests; honing their methodologies in community with others in the same way beauty professionals and cosmetic chemists assess formulas and trial products.
Performance Girl New Yorkβs promotional campaign runs throughout Performance Space New Yorkβs 2026-2027 season as a digital publication (@performancegirlnewyork on Instagram, Substack & YouTube) and convenes for a masterclass open to the public during a two week long installation.
