Launch of Movement Research Performance Journal Issue #62

In conjunction with We Exist in the Ambivalence of Those Motherfuckers, co-organizers maura nguyen donohue, Lumi Tan, and Anh Vo guest edited Issue #62 of Movement Research Performance Journal, inviting 21 Vietnamese artists, curators, and organizers engaged in experimental performance to contribute reflections on their own work, on historical spaces, performances, and events, or on present concerns.

To celebrate the launch of the journal, donohue, Tan, Vo, contributor Vu Duc Toan, and MRPJ editor-in-chief Joshua Lubin-Levy will read excerpts from the journal, followed by a screening of the documentary Hanoi Eclipse – The Music of Dai Lam Linh (2010) directed by Barley Norton.

The series of paintings originates from the artist’s concern for migrant workers and homeless people. Referencing real-life images, historical events, and popular culture, the works send the dreams of these individuals, their bodies, and the vehicles they use (at once tools for survival and instruments in their search for life) up to the clouds as a reminder of their plight and of how easily their stories are forgotten.

(Possibility): a story, a river, a mirror, a map Closing | Forge Project x Open Room

Come celebrate a story, a river, a mirror, a map: Forge Project Reading Room as it closes its year-long residency in Performance Space New York’s Open Room.

The evening will begin with a screening of Walter Scott’s Organza’s Revenge (2024), followed by a conversation with the filmmaker and interdisciplinary artist. The screening and conversation will be followed by karaoke, food by galle from Vivir Sabrosa, and a selection of drinks in Open Room to close out the evening.

Doors open at 6:30pm. Screening begins at 7pm. Food, drinks, and karaoke from 8:15pm onwards.

Making the Worlds (Presence)

Join Bonney Hartley and Wunetu Wequai Tarrant for an evening of readings, screenings, and conversation at Performance Space New York as part of Forge Project’s year-long installation and residency in PSNY’s OPEN ROOM.

Over the course of the evening, Bonney Hartley will read a selection of her poetic work and Wunetu Wequai Tarrant will screen Shinnecock Succotash Cooking and She Sits With Me, two short films made by Ayim Kutoowonk , a Shinnecock women’s language group. Hartley and Tarrant will then join Sarah Biscarra Dilley (yaktitʸutitʸu yaktiłhini ), Forge Project Director of Relational Education, in conversation about their personal and community-based work.

Language, visual media, and poetics are among methods used since time immemorial to document histories, shared knowledge, and deepen political, social, and cultural practice. While the mediums we use may shift over time, this speaks to the ongoing nature of Indigenous ways of knowing and being – that endure and expand beyond the limitation of colonial imagination. Highlighting the confluence of communities from what is now New York City and Long Island, Making the Worlds (Presence) centers the ongoing relationships homeland communities maintain through embodied, creative, and relational practice.

Writing in Relation (Language)

Thursday, May 7, 7–9pm, join members of the 2025–2026 Forging journal cohort for a conversation on issues and opportunities facing writers working today hosted at Performance Space New York as part of Forge Project’s year-long installation and residency in PSNY’s OPEN ROOM.

Forging editorial advisory committee member Joseph M. Pierce will moderate a conversation between writers and cohort members Adrienne Keene and Angélica María Cuevas on working across genres, languages, and geographical contexts, from personal histories of displacement on Cherokee Nation to current fights for territorial sovereignty in the Amazon. The writers will also discuss how they engage with and hold themselves accountable to these stories, and the role art plays in mobilizing narratives beyond cultural spaces and into broader political arenas.
