Open Movement – Fall 2026
Community Space, Performances, and More
- Keith Haring Theater
- February 1 - December 13, 2026
Every Sunday from noon to 4pm, we invite you to our theaters where Open Movement is held. Curated and organized by Monica Mirabile, Open Movement is a free program open to all ages, abilities, and levels of experience that offers both space for self-guided movement practice and artist-led workshops. Here, participants are invited to move in whatever way they choose—stretching, drawing, dancing, rehearsing, and observing if they don’t feel called to move. Folks in the Open Movement community describe this environment as a sacred space for self-discovery, connection, and grounding towards personal and collective practices.
At 4pm, our program shifts to feature workshops guided by artists and practitioners. Each week, these sessions offer a unique opportunity for participants to engage in two hours of participatory practice, exploring a range of themes from movement techniques, to performance philosophies, wellness practices and beyond. Open Movement workshop facilitators are a part of our extended Performance Space network: many of these artists have been regular participants in Open Movement and have created or hosted programs in our theaters.
This season features workshops by Eartheater’s child (Nova Harlem), Dorchel Haqq, Charmaine Bee, Andros Zins-Browne, Sophie Ortiz, Gillian Walsh, Sigrid Lauren, Viva Ruiz, and Works In Progress showings by Cristina Moya-Palacios and Viva Soudan!
As part of our commitment to process-focused initiatives, throughout the year we also host WIP Feedback Front, a showcase of works in progress from artists, many of whom are part of the Open Movement community. Artists present their projects in a casual, supportive atmosphere to get feedback while the works are still being developed. Audience members are invited to share their responses anonymously, creating open exchange between creators and observers. This season WIP will be showcased on October 11th and December 13th whether you’re experienced or a newcomer. Our mission is to provide a welcoming space for curious-minds to reconnect, ground themselves, and expand their perspectives, wherever they may be on their journey.
Fall 2026 Schedule:
Nova Harlem is a 1-year-old that has just taken her first steps, literally, in preparation to lead this workshop. By autumn, she will have developed an elastic practice in throwing her body into every muscular inhibition her synapses fires. As she observes and mimics the world, and all the people in it, the tables will turn on October 4th when every move she makes is immediately mirrored by the host of attendees. This innocent dictation of synchronized bodies, led by a cherub, will undoubtedly leave a trail of wonderment in all the hearts that attend.
Sensing the Unseen is an experimental, sensory-driven movement ritual that invites participants to step beyond choreography and into the raw intelligence of their bodies. Blending yoga, somatics, intuitive dance, breathwork and vocal expression, this class becomes an exploration of what moves us physically, emotionally and energetically.
We work with sensation as our guide: breath, rhythm, tension, softness and impulse. This offering centers reclamation of voice, instinct, and expression, inviting movement that is honest rather than performative. Accessible to all levels and especially supportive for “non-dancers” seeking inner connection and embodied freedom.
During our time together in Liver Submersion Dream Workshop we will deep dive into the space that is our livers and think about how our relationship to our livers impact our sleep dream worlds.
Our livers support us in so many regulatory functions, it is a filtration organ and supports in regulation of digestion or hormonal system and in TCM systems the liver is ruled by jupiter and is an organ that holds and filters emotions such as anger. As we filter and process so many changes, shifts, in terms of climate change and our ecosystems, multiple wars and genocides, deaths, transitions, births, there is no denying that this impacts our mind, dreams and internal organs as we process. I find this time incredibly important to come together to support one another and process.
We will discuss our current dream states as well as herbal support and dream practices that can hold us during this time!
Together we think about deep diving into our liver as a way to reclaim and remember our dreams and to use our dream space to speak to our liver. What do we want to gently support in releasing? What do we want to justifiably sit with a little longer?
We will look at ways to use herbs that support liver health and visualize swimming through our liver to support us through shifts and changes. Over the course of two hours we will reflect on our recent dream worlds, talk about liver function, practice visualizations to support our dreaming and relationships with our liver and sip on tea together.
FEEDS a workshop led by artist/ choreographer Andros Zins-Browne that expands upon his ongoing research into the relationship between embodied movement and our digital avatars. In FEEDS, participants will create, share and remix each other’s ‘dance memes’ -micro-choreographies of several seconds that express ‘specific whatevers’. If memes are to culture what genes are to the body (Richard Dawkins, The Selfish Gene, 1976) how might future bodies –coded by memes– gather, move, and communicate expressions that echo continuously, without author or origin?
STUNTING X GATHERING is a community workshop exploring cheerleading stunts as a sculptural, collaborative practice. Building and deconstructing pyramid structures and group lifts using exercises drawn from competitive cheerleading and playful improvisation. Absolutely no cheerleading experience required—this space is purposely designed to experiment outside the pressure of a varsity all-star. Expect awkwardness, success, falls, and the surprising joy of launching a body into the air. Drawing on Sophie’s background as an athlete, coach, and performer, the workshop treats the stunt as both a physical puzzle and a cultural artifact—a “Hyper American!” gesture far overdue for a make-over. As a team we mix cheerleading’s rigid discipline with the chaos of artists.
ANGEL TALK is a ritual technology of consciousness, where the body serves as both oracle and laboratory. Through guided movement scores, meditation, improvisation, and collective choreographic inquiry, participants will explore the interplay of, the matter and the mystery. We will engage attention as a creative force, using movement to investigate perception, consciousness and our relationship to the waking world. All levels of movement experience, only 18+ years or older.
Let’s peer into the phenomena of how the dance floor needs that first person to crack it open and let everyone in. Exploring how our bodies at the party can be the same nerve required to initiate and join anti fascist actions.
WIP Feedback Front is a showcase of works in progress from artists, many of whom are part of the Open Movement community. Artists present their projects in a casual, supportive atmosphere to get feedback while the works are still being developed.
