PS122’s First Vine Video

PS122 just joined the new social network Vine, which is all about posting 6 second videos. We’re a little worried that attention spans have gotten THIS short but thought we’d give it a try anyway. Director of Production Derek Lloyd sent in this great video of their innovative way of loading cables out of our upstairs theater in preparation for our upcoming renovation.

PS122 is “Like Escaping And Coming Home All At Once”

Recent PS122 intern Bella Riza wrote this wonderful look back at her days shooting & editing videos for our COIL festival. Big thanks to Bella and all of our interns without whom we wouldn’t be able to do what we do. If you’d like to intern for PS122 you can find info on our Volunteer page.

Sometimes it feels like walking into a home when you step foot into PS122’s offices in Greenpoint. I don’t really know how to explain that, it might be something to do with the fact that there is always something going on or being worked out like a functioning house. It could be the family of warm people that all work in the same space too. That’s how it felt on my first day of my internship with Video/Creative Technology there. Usually the way you see and sense a place that you come to know well changes over time. I feel like my first impressions of PS122 remain essentially similar to that first day.

Hold Music of the Month: Taken by Trees

For our second month of curating PS122’s hold music, we picked a new track by Taken by Trees called “Horizon.”
You might recognize their sound from the Season Launch video, which used their track “Dreams” as a luscious backdrop. Their first full-length album, Other Worlds came out in October. Give us a ring while you’re standing in line to vote today – we promise not to pick up for a while so you can hear the jam.

Ivan Martinez on Why PS122

Last month, the Chairman of PS122’s Board, Ivan Martinez, took the time to write about his experiences as a participant in Choreography for Blackboards, which was presented last January as part of COIL 2012.

My name is Ivan Martinez and I’m the chairman of the board of Performance Space 122.  I’ve been on the board since 1998.  I was never an artist or performer and my involvement has been mostly to help support and manage the institution. This past January, for the first time ever, I was asked to be a performance – Michael Klien’s Choreography for Blackboards which was part of PS122’s COIL festival.  I was honored to be asked, but also petrified at the prospect of performing in front of a paying audience.  As part of the show, I wouldn’t have a PowerPoint presentation or the scripted set of charts that are part and parcel of my day job.  This was new territory for me.

PS122 Hold Music of the Month: Efterklang

When I first became the IT guy at PS122 there were some real eccentricities in the way the 100+ year-old building was hooked up. Our phone and internet came in on a frail wire which stretched perilously from a building on East 10th Street across a wide courtyard, ending up in a a rusty metal box outside the downstairs theater. Snow and wind storms were cause for week-long outages. Inside the building there were nests of phone and ethernet cables stretching to the various homemade treehouses we called our offices.
