Annie Dorsen on “A Piece of Work”

At PS122’s SPAN series we heard from Annie Dorsen about her new show, “A Piece of Work” (formerly “False Peach”), which uses a series of elaborate actions to control actors and stage directions in a massive deconstruction of Hamlet. Well the show recently premiered at Seattle’s On the Boards and Intiman theater sat down with Annie Dorsen to discuss the making of her show on this podcast. I’m looking forward to seeing the show when it premieres in New York.

Between the Columns

Looking back at videos of New York performance art and dance in the 1980’s, it’s sometimes hard to tell which of the handful of spaces the piece was performed but PS122’s upstairs theater always stands out as soon as you see the 2 Corinthian columns in the middle of the stage. When PS122 was a school, the room served as a cafeteria and it was probably more suited to children carrying lunch trays than dancers spinning on each others’ backs but throughout the years choreographers and set designers have happily (or begrudgingly) incorporated the iconic columns into their performances.

When we move back into the building our spaces will be on the 4th floor, and for better or worse (most likely better) free of columns. But the columns themselves were much loved by the staff and artists of PS122. They’ve been painted every color imaginable, covered with lights, fabric, fake plants, slime, and even blood. During the final Avant-Garde-Arama in the space artists and staff signed the columns. The photos below are an attempt do document the love letters written to these columns – we’ll miss you!

Hold Music of the Month: Autre Ne Veut

For this month’s hold music we’re playing a great new song by Brooklyn’s Autre Ne Veut called “Counting”. Give us a ring at 212-477-5829 to count down the seconds until we pick up the phone (or you can just click below to hear the song in its entirety!). Last year after seeing his highly-theatrical live show I spoke to Autre Ne Veut about developing a piece for the stage at PS122 – maybe in our new building? In the mean time you can see Autre Ne Veut playing tracks off his transcendent new album at Santos Party House on Wednesday night.

“Intermission” at 150 1st Ave

On the last day in January, on our last night in the building at 150 1st Avenue, Elastic City took a group of stakeholders & staff on an artist-led walk to celebrate the spaces of PS122 as they had been since 1980. The walk was entitled Intermission and we were invited to stretch our legs, take a piss and walk through the historic theaters one last time. We dug in, dressed up and tagged the wall before it fell — house lights (and sparklers!) were blinking…

The walk was dimly lit but here are a few photos that came out that night:

Special thanks to Elastic City’s Todd Shalom and Niegel Smith for crafting a wonderful way to say one last adieu (for now!).
