Part installation and part durational performance, NeoLabial Acheiropoieton (NLA) is the latest work from danyele, a transwoman set-maker working at the intersection of performance, social-practice, and sculpture. NLA will be free and open to the public starting June 5 and will culminate with timed ticketed one-on-one experiences from sunup to sundown on its final day, July . danyele describes,
“The NLA are a set of transexual icons deterritorializing redemption within . A glorified accumulation of neighborhood trash, this work consecrates memory and consumption on sheltered ground like so many nests. I’m ruminating on the operating theater and falsified relics, anti-Black trans-medicalism, and extralegal eviction, until you find yourself in flight.”
This iteration of NLA grew out of a three year relationship with Performance Space that started when danyele took shelter and showed work here as part of the 02020 project. During her time here, danyele often felt excluded and misunderstood by the institution. NLA acknowledges the existing rift in the artist/institution relationship and uses it as a source of creativity.
